ENDMILLS / SLOTDRILLS - HSS & Carbide

Slotdrills are the 2 flute cutters primarily used for milling keyways and slots. They can plunge downwards to depth in a drilling action. Slotdrills do not have a+ tolerance on diameter size so won"t ever cut oversize.

Endmills, on the other hand can be 4, 6 or 8 flutes, generally for milling along 90' edges or finishing side walls. Most common now to also have centre cutting flutes for down feeding; but feed at 1/3 of side feed load, as swarf will jam the flutes.

Also available are "unimills" or 3 flute slotdrills.  These are a general purpose substitute for the above with +/- tolerances of size; therefore not as accurate sizes. 

Plain shank or threaded shank High Speed Steel (HSS) cutters are both still available and stocked at Miller's Tooling Pty Ltd.  Various coatings are also used to promote longer life and higher speeds. These milling tools can be ordered as short or long series. To machine aluminium and plastics high 45' helix cutters can be used to freely clear the soft stringy swarf.  RMR or rapid metal removal cutter / ripper cutters leave a rugged finish but rough out material with huge depths as their name implies.

Solid carbide slotdrills and endmills have certainly taken over the HSS market in Australia recently, providing in excess of 10 times speeds and life of traditional HSS cutting tools.  Due to the increase in sales volume the prices have dropped dramatically making carbide endmills and carbide slotdrills more economical to use on most jobs.  However, rigidity is still the key, required to run carbide cutting tools.

The German cutting tool company "PROTOTYP" is new to Australia, although widely renowned throughout Europe as being one of the world leaders in carbide and HSS cutting tools. They have recently amalgamated with Walter and Titex tools to provide solutions to most jobs.  Miller's Tooling Pty Ltd proudly represents Prototyp in the SE QLD region.  Prototyp has carbide milling tools to suit toolmaking etc providing carbide finishing cutters with range of radius corners, ballnose and longer length carbide tools.  Ball nose HSS and ball nose carbide milling cutters are all readily available in both metric and imperial sizes.
