Gear cutting can be very confusing to select the right gear cutter, as art of gear cutting is a specialised trade. In 2015, Miller’s Tooling Pty Ltd acquired the gear cutter business SUPERIOR TOOL SERVICES & stock, as Kyp retired after some 65 years in the gear & spline cutters manufacturing industry.
Kyp has trained & passed on much experience & technical specifications, so Miller’s Tooling can also continue to supply gear cutters & spline cutters. Now Miller’s Tooling Pty Ltd is the major supplier in Australia of spline cutters & gear cutters.
Holding a huge range of gear cutter & spline cutter stock on the shelf & experience, supplying to other sales resellers & engineer shops alike.

Hob or hobbing cutters are also used along with gear cutters for milling gears. The hobbing cutter is used on a hobbing machine designed specifically to machine gears, sprockets & splines.

Involute Gear Cutters & Gear Hobbing Cutters are mostly made of High Speed Steel (HSS), often TIN coated for prolonged life.

Gear cutters are avail in various sizes & types depending on the gear to be machined, as their profile suits only one type of gear form. Various other gear cutters are also used such as shaper spline cutters.

Involute Gear Cutters are supplied in either of the two systems;
MODULE (Metric/Pitch)  or   DP (Diametrical Pitch) - (Imperial).

Involute Gear Cutters are supplied to cut any number of teeth required for gears from 0.5 Module to 50 Module in the Metric / Pitch system.

Involute Gear Cutters are supplied to cut any number of teeth required for gears from 64 DP to 0.5 DP  in the Imperial system.
Conforming to British standards; BS 2518, IS 5698 in a set of numbers.

Two type of gear cutter forms are avail. Diametrical Pitch (INCH) ranging from 0.5 – 64 DP and Module (METRIC) ranging 0.5mm – 50mm gear tooth form.

Gear cutters have 14 ½’ or 20’ pressure angle.

3 things are required to identify an involute gearcutter; please specify the DP (diametrical pitch) or MODULE, Number of Teeth, and the PA (pressure angle) required when ordering involute gear cutters.

See select below for Number of the gear cutter - by the Number of teeth required to be cut.

Involute gear cutters MODULE

There are 8 cutters per module (pitch) with this metric system, and each cutter will cut the range of teeth shown within the pitch. For MODULE - The pitch is the size of the tooth on a gear wheel and this is worked out by dividing the diameter.

Eg; a 60 tooth wheel with a diameter of 60mm is classed as a

1 Module ( 60 divided by 60 = 1), a 60 tooth wheel x 30mm Dia = 0.5 Module.

The 8 cutters within this Module or Pitch system all have a slightly different shape in the tooth profile; this is because the mesh angle of a tooth on a 12 tooth wheel is different to the one on a 60 tooth wheel, this is to allow both wheels to run together when rotating without binding.

There is a set of numbers, No. 1 – No. 8, to cover the range of gear teeth required, even up to a rack on any number of gear teeth.  Below is the standard chart for selecting which NUMBER OF CUTTER required. Each number of a gear cutter, covers a range of gear teeth or splines to be cut.

Mostly the gear cutters we supply have a standard 1” BORE, regardless of Module or DP gear cutter. Although some metric bore gearcutters are avail.

The Pressure Angle of gear cutters can vary, although most common is 20’ PA for Module gear cutters.  Either 20’ PA  or 14 ½’PA for the DP gear cutters.
