LIVE CENTRES

LiveCentres_image007.jpg

 PIPER LIVE CENTRE

The live centre has virtually replaced the "dead centre" of past, giving way to no grease and burning out points. Nowadays, dead centres, plain HSS and carbide tipped are generally only used for cylindrical grinding.

LiveCentres_image001.gifLive centres to suit lathes will come in many "morse tapers" and the bearings, seals and point configuration depend on the job the live centre is selected for.  Commonly referred to also as a "revolving lathe centre", the live centre has bearings so as the hardened, ground point can rotate freely, whilst supporting the weight of the longer overhanging job at the lathe tailstock end to reduce chatter and vibration, which will give a better finish whilst turning.

CNC lathes have demanded live centres with speeds up to 5000rpm, with huge load ratings on the bearings. Our suppliers, such as Daintree Tools Australia, has risen to the occasion and we proudly offer their live centres, as well as many other economical brands.

LiveCentres_image003.jpgDaintree's "spacepoint" centre is the most popular, allowing threading tools etc to get in close to small diameters. It can also handle huge speeds and loads.

Spring loaded centres and facedrivers are also available when turning hardened work.

LiveCentres_image005.jpgBox sets of interchangeable points to suit a live centre can be easily adapted to most general jobbing; shops and hobbyist alike. The small pipe centre and reverse centre can also be very handy.

We sell the following brands:
