Parting off on a lathe is probably the hardest operation, both for the operator and for stress on the tool and job. Miller's Tooling Pty Ltd can offer advice and technical backup to get your parting off tool working with ease.
We can offer a variety of brands, chipbreakers and carbide grades & coatings for all materials including 4140 steel, Bisalloy, stainless steel or aluminium/nylons.
High Speed Steel blades & brazed carbide blades are still available off the shelf.
The popular indexable insert & blade is economical nowadays;
even for the hobbyist.
TIP: You must flood your part off tool with coolant (aprox 8%). This will help swarf to buckle and curl up in the carbide inserts chipbreakers. The swarf should curl, look like a clock spring then break off about 20mm diameter. This will prevent rubbing on the finished face and no further facing off should be required. If you are getting strands of pigtail swarf, try increasing
the feed rate.
Most operators part off too slow and light feed which is slow and powders the swarf; prematurely wearing the carbide parting insert. Usually for steels part off around SPEED110M/min, FEED 0.10mm/rev (remembering most centre lathes ½ the cross feed shown).
Grooving and face machining (trepanning) also has a huge range of toolholders and trepanning blades to machine all types of materials & diameters. Various chipbreakers are used to control the swarf and create pigtail swarf to exit the facegroove better.
