TAPPING CHUCKS

tapping001.jpgTapping chucks and tapping heads are designed to assist tapping to cut threads in a machine. The problems faced in tapping in a machine are mainly tap breakage and stripping of threads on the exit of a tap.

Taps breaking is an expensive and frustrating problem overcome by usintapping003.jpgg tapping heads. Generally, the tap will break if loaded up too much in a hole due to swarf not exiting or forcing into gummy materials, such as stainless steel, where swarf will put excessive pressure on the tap. Secondly, the tap when suddenly stopped and reversed out of the hole in a milling machine or drill will break due to the drawing down of the tool.

tapping005.jpgThe tapping head used on a drilling machine or conventional mill or lathe ideally has a clutch mechanism, so the torque can be set depending on the tap diameter or material. Either reversible or auto-reversible tapping heads are used. Auto-reversing tapping heads can be used without having to stop the spindle to reverse direction of the tap; the spindle rotates clockwise whilst the tap is reversed out of the hole anti-clockwise. Auto-reverse tapping heads are best suited for production tapping.

tapping007.jpgMachine taps should be used in a tapping head or for machining, rather than standard hand taps. The "gun nose" tap is strongest type of tap for tapping thru. holes (pushing swarf forwards thruough the hole); where a "spiral flute" taps is suited to tap blind holes (swarf exiting back up the flutes). Also, "cold form" or "thread flow" taps can tap holes without any swarf, although material needs to be ductile.

tapping009.jpgTapping chucks are available to suit CNC machines, usually the ER collet system is used with compression and extension at the collet end to provide play as the machine spindle slows to a stop, then rapidly reversing out. This prevents breakage of the tap, especially with tapping under M10. Some operators believe tapping can be done using only a collet chuck due to the canned tapping cycle in the machine. Sometimes this is successful, until smaller taps are broken. Then a tapping chuck can prevent a lot of downtime.

tapping014_3.jpgThe "Bilz " tapping system is a great system for production tapping where you can dedicate a tap size to a collet that already has a fixed clutch mechanism built into the collet. This system provides a quick change selection of collets with different size taps ready to go.

Miller's Tooling has an air-operated tapping arm with this system available.  It can be mounted on a bench or trolley to provide a permanent tapping station, whereby unskilled people or tradesman can tap straight 90' holes without any fear of tap breakage. This tapping arm is generally more economical than tapping large quantity holes on a CNC machine centre or mill. Different taps can be popped in or out as required quickly.

Tapping fluids such as "Rapid Tap" tapping fluid or "Tapmagic" tapping fluid or heavier concentrated coolants (aprox. 10%) should be applied to all tapping applications. Rapidtap paste is also handy, it is like a grease compound to stay on a job or tap.
