DIES & DIENUTS
Dies used for cutting threads onto spindles are produced in 2 types of material.
The first being “Carbon” dies or “tungsten chrome alloy steel” dies & dienuts. These dies & dienuts are generally the most popular available in the market, however only limited life for keeping their edge sharp. Ideally suited only as a cheaper, or hobbyist usage for cutting threads.
“High Speed Steel” dies & “High Speed Steel” dienuts are for serious usage cutting threads on most steels & even stainless steel. HSS dies & dienuts can be difficult to source, however most thread pitches & sizes in HSS are readily avail from Miller’s Tooling Pty Ltd. Left handed button dies and dienuts are also readily available.
Once again, the grade or quality of high speed steel (HSS) dies or high speed steel dienuts will vary depending on manufacturer & price accordingly.
Identify between HSS dies & dienuts are marked “HSS “on the face of the die or dienut.

Button dies are the round cutting die, avail in all the thread forms & size of threads. Button dies are used to cut a 
thread along a shaft or spindle already turned to the size required. Button dies are clamped into a die stock, and then wound down using the lead in cutting edge to start the thread. Often, a clamping screw is available to tighten the thread tolerance as required.
Dienuts are generally used to clean up an existing thread, rather than cut a new thread. Their hexagonal shape also allows a spanner or shifter to wind the dienut along the thread easily. Great for maintenance applications or to run over a thread turned on a lathe to finish it off to size.

Tapping fluids such as "Rapid Tap" tapping fluid or "Tapmagic" tapping fluid or heavier concentrated coolants (aprox. 10%) should be applied to all tapping applications. Rapidtap paste is also handy, it is like a grease compound to stay on a job or tap.
