PULL STUDS
(Retaining Studs or Retention knobs)
Pull studs, retaining studs or retention knobs are the bolt like piece that is screwed into the arbor on a CNC milling or drilling machine. There are several different types of pull studs available to suit varieties of CNC machines, most pull studs are made to suit specific CNC machine brands. They often look similar and appear to be interchangeable, but in reality they are not.
The pull stud actually locks the arbor into the spindle, preventing the arbor from coming out unless released intentionally. Wear & tear factor is applied to pull studs and pull studs should be checked and replaced every 2 years in production. Machining Centre manufacturers have increased the draw bar force on retention knobs frequently in recent years. It is now more important than ever to check your retention knobs periodically. Remember to fully tighten the retention knob. Failure to do so may result in the toolholder coming loose during operation.
It is critical that the correct pull stud is selected to suit that particular CNC machine as pull stud sizes are often taken for granted by inexperienced salesman & operators alike – check your machines spindle specifications.
At Miller’s Tooling, we recommend you have an extra 5 or so pull studs on hand, so it is easier when purchasing a new arbor in the future.
Pull studs are avail with or without thru coolant holes which also needs to be specified.
